What is so special about this place?

The mountain and quarry have been a part of the community’s history since 1807. The road has been in use by mail carriers, farmers, and anyone seeking shelter from the elements since that time. There is a spring on the north side of the mountain which provides enough water to run a small community. The site yielded a ton of iron ore which was used in the manufacture of railroad spikes, as well as wagon axles and bridges.
The mountain is still an important part of the local economy but without humans it would have been left unused. The city manages to keep it open and accessible for public use 24/7 with relatively little maintenance.
When the quarry was first dug there were no environmental laws to protect the natural vegetation. Since that time the city of Watkinsville has cleared out undergrowth, replanted trees and protected existing trees.
The mountain had to be protected as a historic site and remain accessible for public use. The city of Watkinsville purchased it from its private owners in 1991. As you enter the mountain on post road you pass a sign which reads “Historic Site”. There is a sign at the entrance to the quarry which states “Historic Site”.
