Introduction — How Sweet Shop Bakery High Point Helped Get My Bakery Business Going
Sweet Shop Bakery is located in High Point, North Carolina and opened its doors in 2011. The owners of Sweet Shop Bakery, Sharon and Arnie Cohen, also own an ice cream shop next door. Together, the two shops are called Sweet Shop Bakery and Ice Cream Shop. We will discuss how Sweet Shop Bakery helps sell our delicious baked goods and ice cream to the public by providing ideas that have worked for us.
The History of Sweet Shop Bakery and Ice Cream Shop
It all started back in 1971 when Arnie Cohen was experimenting with different flavors at his own home. Arnie’s hobby soon became a business. He began selling ice cream to his neighbors and friends in his hometown of Greensboro, North Carolina. As time went on, Arnie added other frozen treats like Snow Cones and Italian Ice to his menu. In 1975 Arnie and Sharon moved their family to High Point, North Carolina. High Point has a growing population, over 400,000 people, and a large number of new businesses. There are many people in the area that are retired that spend their free time shopping and eating out. Arnie was very successful at selling his ice cream products to the public on his own until 1984 when he opened the first Sweet Shop Bakery store in High Point.

What is a Sweet Shop?
A Sweet Shop is a business where people can come to buy candies, fudge and other sweet treats. Sweet Shops are also called Candy Stores and were very popular in the late 1800s to the 1960s. They were a great place to go to buy home made treats from local givers and also had all kinds of novelty items and household novelties galore. You could find everything from store-bought candies to homemade candies or fudge. Sweet Shops were also a great place to find hams, bootleg whiskey, caramels and other delightful items that the candy making business was not able to offer. Many people in the past made their own items and sold them in a candy store.
The following is a list of some of the well-known Sweet Shops from bygone years:
“The Royal Candy Store Eaten Sweet Shop Virginia” “Virginia”
Virginia was a popular place for both slaves to come up north and for other planters to get their daily supply of sugar cane and cotton. The first use of Virginia for producing sugar cane came about at the end of 1619 when Virginia became a British colony. Many plantation owners and planters set up shop in Virginia and the first real plantation was known as Bermuda Hundred. The first sweet shop was established in Hampton, Virginia.

What Makes a Great Day at the Bakery?
The best day at the bakery is a Saturday. Saturday is our biggest day and the breads are in demand. We make all of our breads, including French baguettes, croissants, crostini and cinnamon rolls on a daily basis and these bakes are used for breakfast or for dessert at the Sweet Shop Bakery. If a customer is at Sweet Shop Bakery buying just a loaf of bread, they can order a croissant or cinnamon rolls. But if they visit on a Saturday, the bakery will be packed with customers who have come to buy other items.
The last time I worked a Saturday we had an hour and twenty minutes of downtime in the middle of the day. This may have been due to holiday traffic or because it was raining and people were not venturing outside, but that day was one of our best days ever. Our sales were over $500,000 and we baked out of practically everything we had on the shelves.
Saturday is always busy, but we can make it even better by providing great service to our customers. I feel blessed to be a part of the Sweet Shop Bakery. I love making and baking bread every day and it is so fun to serve people their favorite croissants, cinnamon rolls or baguettes. We have created a culture where our bakers are happy to provide great service with a smile.
We Are More Than Just Cupcakes!
Cupcakes and much more are available at Sweet Shop Bakery. We make hamburger buns, cinnamon rolls and many types of cakes with buttercream frostings and fillings. Our most popular cupcakes are the classic vanilla cupcake. We have so many other options that a customer can choose from, including our special chocolate or red velvet cupcakes. We also offer some of our cupcakes in a smaller size, called a petit four. Petits fours are bite-sized pieces of cake, decorated and cut into beautiful designs. They make great treats for kids.
We provide cupcake services for all types of events and celebrations, including birthday parties, wedding receptions, baby showers and even funerals. We also offer a variety of treats to go along with our delicious cupcakes. We sell individual cupcakes (both white and frosted), bundles of several different flavors and we also sell bigger sizes of items like hamburger buns or cinnamon rolls.
