Introduction: How is AI Changing Industrial Design Education?

UCLA’s Contextual Robotics Institute (CoRI) has been a pioneer in using AI to fuel design programs for upwards of 60 years. In the past, students would hand draw their schematics, and then submit them to CoRI prototype labs where robots would create their designs into a physical format. This process was extremely time-consuming and expensive, and many design students were unable to work on their ideas due to financial and logistical concerns. Now, with the introduction of AI, CoRI is able to provide real-time design feedback for their students.
Manufacturers have been utilizing computer assisted design (CAD) technology for decades; however, CAD software has not made a significant impact in the world of industrial design because of its inaccuracies and limitations. AI is now being utilized to correct CAD’s deficiencies, allowing the technology to become a more integral part in the design process.
AI allows engineers and designers to develop new products by identifying potential problems and refining concepts without having to print 3D models every time an adjustment is made to a schematic. AI can also be used to create new designs by extrapolating a schematic into a concept or making connections between ideas that were previously unrelated.
Designers and inventors are currently using AI in a variety of ways. The following are five examples of how modern designers are implementing AI today, and how future designers will use this technology in the years to come:

The Potential of Artificial Intelligence in Industrial Design

A computer can take all of the data that a designer has input and process it much more efficiently than any human, especially in how a system interacts with its environment. With AI, industrial design students will no longer have to manually design structures to create the object they want. Instead, students who learn how to use AI will be able to write a program that tells the computer what the designer wants. The computer will then take this information and create the perfect product for that person through a series of algorithms.
Before getting into how AI works, it is important to understand what industrial design students would use it for. Industrial designers work with objects that utilize a lot of technology, whether it is electronic or has moving parts. These designers also work with software, making them perfect candidates to design algorithms that are already coded into the product.
It also helps if they have an interest in mathematics and logic problems since they will be dealing with creating systems that need to have a way to solve logic problems.
In order to make the products that AI finds, the designer will have to create a system that is both intelligent and has a great eye for detail. If a designer leaves out any important information the computer might not be able to find its way through.

This means that a designer can make what they want, and this leads to more creative works in physical products. Industrial design is a field where people want their creations to be unique; others want their creations be different from those of others. AI helps industrial designers do this, it will allow them to make new designs without having to start from scratch every time. Ai-assisted Prototyping and Manufacturing Techniques for Automated Assembly & Disassembly

By using AI in the design process to remove the tedious and sometimes impossible parts of design, designers will be able to focus on what is important: how the design looks, interacts with its environment, how it is manufactured, and how it interacts with its user. Designers will then be able to prototype and manufacture a product, and test it in the real world. This allows designers to create a reliable product that is tested by users. Therefore, the time-consuming and expensive processes will be eliminated, leading to an increase in the number of prototypes that designers can create and test.
Designers can use artificial intelligence to create a prototype by creating a 3D model of their product. This 3D model can be used in CAD software like SolidWorks or AutoCAD, but it is important to note that these programs are only used for preliminary design purposes. When using CAD software programs, designers have to make sure that the design looks good and runs smoothly in the program. Designers then manually creating prototypes. This involves the designer manually creating 3D models and rendering them with software such as, Photoshop or Maya. After they have finished their design they can create a rendering using keyshot, a computer program that creates a 3D rendering of the product. The model can then be exported as an .stl which can be used to print the prototype.
