This small college town, at the northern end of Chatham County was the home of UNC-CH’s founder – William H. Ashley. The university was established in 1795 when North Carolina legislated that all of the early university students would have to be members of a state-recognized church. William Ashley, a religous leader from Philadelphia saw an opportunity to match church and education, and he proposed the idea for a “college of knowledge.” The original campus in Chapel Hill was designed by Louis H. Asbury, and today is one of the oldest academic buildings still in use in the country.

Chapel Hill is So Unique Because…

In 1793, William H. Ashley, a member of the board of trustees for the newly established University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, purchased 400 acres (1.6 km2) of land from Isaac Hunter and built a home for his family called The Oaks in Carrboro, North Carolina where it still stands today. An important part of the local history, The Barnes House was built in 1825 by Thomas Barnes and later purchased by Governor Charles B. Baldwin, who served in that office from 1880 to 1885. In 1902, the home was purchased and in 1905 remodeled by Charles D. Greene, a local cotton merchant who had made his fortune in Texas and returned to his hometown of Chapel Hill.

The Chapel Hill Social Services organization works within the educational and community systems to ensure each child has access to quality education, health care and services life-long. Their goal is to prevent children from entering the juvenile justice system and keep them out of jail. Their service area is a 10-county district of North Carolina.
I first got involved with the organization about two years ago at an event in Chapel Hill, NC. I was staying with friends and was looking for a cause to help. The conditions in these areas were terrible, and some of the children were going to school hungry or ill-clothed. I was told that the organization was very successful in their efforts to educate children and keep them from the juvenile justice system.
Every year Chapel Hill Social Services organizes a fund drive called “Teachers, Turn Your Classroom Into a Kitchen”. Students can sell whatever they can produce in order to raise money for charity. When I attended the event I met a youth with cerebral palsy who was very close to giving up. He was taken on trips by the organization, but still could not walk. He stayed at home and had to be carried around by his family. Now many people are aware of the Cerebral Palsy Foundation and other charities that help children with this disorder. Obviously not everyone knows about Chapel Hill Social Services, however as I have learned many people have no idea where their school lunch money goes or how their tax dollars are being spent in their communities.
