Introduction: The Brand That Launched a Revolution

In 1978, Ugg was born. After the founders saw a country girl in the surf wearing a luxurious sheepskin coat to stay warm, they began importing this traditionally Australian footwear and clothing. With its naturally insulating properties and sleek style, it wasn’t long before these boots became an international sensation. Today, Ugg is one of the leading names in the footwear industry, with a full line of fashion boots and shoes that are functional, durable and always fashionable. Whether you’re looking for boots, shoes or slippers, Ugg has got you covered.
How did all of this happen?
The brand that launched a revolution started in the 1960s in Adelaide, South Australia. During a cold winter, an inventor named Brian Smith was looking for a way to stay warm and protect his feet from rain and snow while he worked on his boat. When he saw an Australian surf lifesaver wearing a sheepskin coat to stay warm and dry between rescues, that’s when it hit him. He could adapt this to become a comfortable and functional piece of footwear. Smith went on to find other partners and in 1963, they started the Ugg Boot Company in Australia.

How the Well-Known Australian Brand Is Upending its Brand Identity

Previously known as the champion of comfortable yet stylish sheepskin boots, Ugg is expanding its brand identity with the launch of a new ready-to-wear line. Taking cues from the classic boots, the new line interprets the original silhouettes in a contemporary way for fashionable women who don’t want to sacrifice style. “By taking those clunky boots we’ve had and giving them new life, we can bring people back and make them part of the story,” says Perri Nunan, VP of design at the brand. The brand counts supermodel Naomi Campbell as a fan, who recently posted a photo of herself wearing Uggs to Instagram . [ARTICLE END]
Ugg Australia – now known for its womenswear line – is celebrating its 45th anniversary. It was founded in Melbourne in 1976 by Italian-born businessman Sidney Lee and Australian Scottish wool shearer Ewan McVittie, who coined the name Ugg – the Aboriginal word for sheepskin. The boots were designed for working sheep farmers, who were tired of wearing them during cold nights on the job.
Ugg boots have become popular with fashion-conscious women, who prefer an animal-friendly alternative to their classic jumpers and parkas. The Ugg brand is easily recognizable for its iconic boots: On-trend, weather-ready, water-resistant and warm. They’re also durable and easy to clean.
